Chimpanzees, or ‘chimps’, are our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. They are very social and live in groups known as communities that can have as many as 150 members. Chimpanzees are endangered due to habitat loss, wildlife crime, bushmeat and illegal exotic pet trades.

Did you know that there are only an estimated 170,000-300,000 chimpanzees left in the wild? Shockingly, some populations, like the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, have dwindled to as few as 6,000 individuals. All chimpanzees face threats from habitat loss and the illegal wildlife and bushmeat trades.
Remarkably intelligent, chimpanzees exhibit self-awareness and tool usage, placing them among the most astute animal species on our planet. As close relatives of humans, we share a common ancestry, diverging from their lineage approximately 9.3 to 6.5 million years ago, toward the end of the Miocene epoch. These facts underscore the urgent need for concerted conservation efforts to protect these remarkable creatures and preserve their habitats for future generations.
