Why Fauna?

02.01.25

At Fauna Brewing, we are mad about beer and crazy for conservation. It is the core of who we are. We're not just here to make great beer, that's why we choose a different wildlife conservation cause to support with every beer that we brew. Supporting efforts to fight species decline whilst minimising our own environmental impact is at the forefront of what we do.

When our founder, Phil, left university, he travelled to Botswana and studied to become a safari guide. He lived in the bush for 6 weeks in the middle of nowhere. One day in a hammock, under a mangosteen tree, a local resident approached Phil and shared his story about how he made beer out of mangosteen berries. It was at that moment, Phil had the idea to make beer out of mangosteen berries to save Rhinos. However, there were some flaws and barriers in that particular plan, it was not yet a fully formed idea. Transporting a relatively rare berry thousands of miles, and taking away the Rhino's favourite food, to try and save it, is a contradiction. But a seed had been planted; that is how Phil dreamt of Fauna, combining craft beer with conservation and nature.

We brew with purpose. Each beer is a commitment to conservation, supporting a different wildlife cause with every brew. The goal is to create a beer brand that gives back to the planet. We’ve handpicked some incredible conservation partners, including David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, Painted Dog Conservation, Cheetah Conservation Fund, African Pangolin Working Group, Red Squirrel Survival Trust and Plant Partner.

To ensure that we could begin making an impact from the very start, we chose to raise funds through events. With our African wildlife inspired core range at centre stage, we have twice hosted a 10km in conjunction with Nice Work, many a community pub quiz at our Taproom and two different Wildlife Art exhibitions and auctions at Arundel Castle. We did this instead of offering a portion of profits to our chosen charities to begin donating straight away. We did not want our chosen charities relying on a percentage of profits from a young and evolving business, we choose to act now.

Our beers are inspired by nature, for nature. Our cask ales, Meadow Maker and Tree Planter have a more direct impact closer to home, planting wildflower seeds or a tree sapling for each cask sold.

When choosing Fauna, you're not just enjoying a beer; you're actively supporting efforts to fight species decline, protect habitats from destruction, and approach conservation from an educational standpoint. Our iconic Fauna shields represent our mission to safeguard endangered species, to serve and protect. Every can of Fauna is vegan-friendly and packaged using UPM Raflatac Forest Film labels, making all our packaging 100% recyclable.

From the start we have engaged with sustainable and regenerative practices, beginning by ensuring all of our packaging is plastic free and recyclable. We are now eliminating brewing waste, by giving spent grain to feed local cows.

We plant 100 wildflower seeds or a tree sapling for every sale of Meadow Maker golden ale or Tree Planter IPA. Wildflower meadows are a highly effective method of carbon capture.

We have already begun to plant on site, just behind our Brewery and Taproom. Our next aim is a fruit tree Orchard.

We are working with the Norfolk Estate who have farmland around Arundel, all of which is less than 3 miles from the brewery. Our goal is to use their malting barley, reducing travel emissions for this vital brewing ingredient.

Through crop rotation, the cattle who will have been fed the spent grain, will then graze in that same field, fertilising the soil, closing the loop and creating a regenerative malting practice.
